It is not unusual for children to have some nervousness when it comes to taking a test. The less the child is prepared for the test the more stress and anxiety is put on him. We as parents can help alleviate some of the stress factors that come into play whenever a child needs to test. The more you can prepare your child the better off he will be. Here are a few tips that you can use to help your child achieve his best.
Doing all homework assignments and going over them with your child is a great way to prepare for a test. The teacher is not going to test your child on a subject that has not already been previously discussed. Also you do not want your child cramming in information the night before a test. When you know that there is a test coming up, prepare for it in advance. Select an area for your child to study in that is free from distraction and that is in a well-lit area.
Getting enough rest the night before your child tests can help tremendously by easing fears. It also makes them feel rejuvenated and they are likely to remember more of what they studied than if they are tired and groggy. Make sure that you do not add to your child’s anxieties by pressuring him to ace his test. Your child should be relaxed the day of the test. If your child feels like he will still be praised even when his score is not perfect, he is likely to do much better.
Eat a good hearty meal with nothing really heavy that may make your child tired and no foods that will make him bounce off the walls. This goes a long way in easing fears about testing. You should praise and reward your child when he does well. But also encourage him to do his best even if he is struggling a little bit. If you find that your child is still having difficulties taking tests, talk to his teacher about his fears.
