As parents it is our jobs to protect, teach, and learn from our children. We never want to think that our children are struggling at school or at home with day to day activities. If our kids are having problems we want to be able to fix whatever is wrong. More importantly parents should know what to look for and when to have your child assessed. It can be difficult for a parent who is faced with a child who potentially could have a learning disability. We can only imagine how hard is for a child who has a disability and realizes that they are different from other children.
It is important to note that a child can excel in several different areas of learning while failing in others. Your child can be a whiz at math and science but be falling short in reading and writing. Lack of coordination is not always indicative of a learning disability but most learning disabled children have coordination problems. And if you see this for an extended period of time that may be a clue your child has a disability.
If you find that your child is relying heavily on memorization and is not making that connection between letters and sounds it may indicate a learning disability. Sometimes children will reverse letters like d and p or mathematical expressions such as + and – signs. A child with a learning disability will typically have trouble learning time. Not clock time but time as in yesterday, today and tomorrow. Learning disabled children will have a hard time grasping that concept. Troubles with remembering facts and impulsive behavior are also indicators of a learning disability.
If you notice any of these signs for extended periods of time then you want to consider having your child assessed by a medical professional.
