Homework is a part of school that every child has to do in order to maintain good grades. It also teaches responsibility to a child. Being able to work neatly, follow instructions by themselves, and can complete in a few hours are life skills that children need in life to succeed. As parents we can help our children with their homework by establishing good habits from the start.
Have a designated area in your house that has no distractions and adequate lighting. Televisions going in the background can by a huge diversion to children trying to complete homework. It is very important that it be quiet for concentration and focus. The time when your child chooses to do homework should be comfortable for your child. If your child works more comfortably in the evening then that is when he should do homework. Some kids do better hitting the books right after school and then have the rest of the evening to play or television time.
Be nearby so that you can pay attention to your child’s habits and be close by if your child needs clarification on instructions. However, do not do your child’s homework. Let him work issues out if he can by himself. After that if he needs help then give it. Make sure that you go over the homework with your child to check for errors. If you do not find any then that is great, but if there are, do not fuss or criticize your child. Talk to your child to see what your child did not understand about the question.
Always keep communication open with the teacher. If your child is having troubles with homework assignments or is finding the assignments too easy, the teacher can help adjust the homework accordingly.
