Choosing to go back to school is a big decision. There are many reasons to do it from expanding your knowledge in your current field, learning a new trade, to finishing your degree. As an adult it can be a challenge to juggle work, school, and family. It can feel as if there isn’t enough time in the day, and the extra stress of suddenly having homework and classes on top of a full day of work can be overwhelming. It’s important to plan your week, organize a work space, and still make time for yourself and your family.
If you work full time or stay home with the kids during the day, any extra time you have for school can be limited. Most colleges offer non-traditional class times, and night and weekend classes or online classes might be a better fit for your schedule. Your outside obligations might prevent you from taking a full time course load, but taking less classes and finishing them is more important that burdening your schedule with classes you’ll have to drop later in the semester.
Keeping an organized work space at home is very important. Turn off the television and radio, and avoid the temptation of surfing the internet. Wait until the kids are in bed to do your homework so you can complete it without distractions. Make sure to dedicate enough time during the week for online courses, and treat them like real classes because they are real classes. A good rule of thumb is to spend one hour per credit on each online class. For example, if the class is three credits spend three hours a week on that class.
The first few weeks getting back into school can be difficult, but make sure to leave enough time for relaxing and spending time with your family. By staying organized and planning ahead you’ll be able to juggle going back to school.
