Finding the Right Online School

Choosing a college, whether online or attending in classroom, is a major decision. In fact, I’d have to say that it’s a decision that can change the course of your life. The right school can catapult you into the forefront of your career field, while others only push you out the door.

Since this is such a major decision, it behooves you to put a little forethought and investigation into your available options, before making your final decision. Of course, before searching for a school, it would help if you decided what type of degree program you want to study for.

Here are some things you should look into when checking out an online university:

  • Does the school offer a degree program in the field you want to study? Okay, this one was a little obvious.
  • How much experience does the school have as an online university? You’d be better off with a university that has lots of experience, so you don’t have to be their guinea pig.
  • What’s the school’s reputation like? Graduating from a school with a good reputation can help you land that all important first job.
  • How broad a selection of classes does the university offer online? Many universities are still working to broaden out their online class offerings. Since this is a new area, you may find some limitations in class availability in some universities.
  • How well are the classes prepared? You should be able to talk someone at the university into letting you look at a couple of online courses, and seeing how well they are prepared. Just like classroom instruction, online classes can vary a lot. You want something that’s going to be easy for you to understand.
  • What’s the university’s policy on teacher availability? Hey, you can learn anything from a book; but, when you really need that professor is when there’s something that you don’t understand. When are those professors available to answer your questions? How many hours a week? Are those hours workable with your schedule?

Finding the answers to these questions should give you a pretty good idea of the school’s ability to meet your educational needs.
